Christian McCaffrey will have an even bigger role in the Panthers' offense this season.

McCaffrey Terence Newman Jersey , the team's first-round draft pick in 2017, carried the ball 117 times for 435 yards and established a franchise rookie record with 80 receptions. He finished the season with seven touchdowns.

While McCaffrey led the Panthers in receptions, he'll be counted on to carry the ball more after the team parted ways with its all-time leading rusher Jonathan Stewart. Panthers two-time NFL Coach of the Year Ron Rivera believes McCaffrey is up to the task, saying he can be a running back who carries the ball 200 times this season.

McCaffrey's durability has been questioned at times because his body build is more akin to a scat back than a power back.

He averaged just 3.7 yards per carry in 2017.

"Yeah, why not?" Rivera said of the prospect of a 200-carry season. "Everybody forgets that when he was (at Stanford) he carried the ball between the tackles more than anybody and touched the ball more than anybody. I don't see why not."

McCaffrey is all for it.

"Obviously anybody on the team wants the ball as much as possible," McCaffrey said. "That is football. You should want to compete. But we are here to win football games, so whatever that means and whatever that takes we're going to do."

McCaffrey, the son of three-time Super Bowl champion wide receiver Ed McCaffrey, likes what he's seen so far from new offensive coordinator Norv Turner, who has taken over for Mike Shula.

He feels "a lot more comfortable" in his second year with the Panthers Doug Flutie Jersey , even though he's learning a new offensive scheme. But he wouldn't discuss what will be different about his workload this year or in what different ways he will be used under Turner for competitive reasons.

"However they want to use me, that is where I will be," McCaffrey said. "I think we have a lot of great talent and a lot of different weapons."

He won't be carrying the entire load in the backfield, of course.

The Panthers added depth at running back signing 2017 1,000-yard rusher C.J. Anderson, who played in Denver and helped the Broncos beat Carolina in the Super Bowl in 2015. Carolina is also expecting some added help from Cameron Artis-Payne and Kenjon Barner.

And don't forget, it was quarterback Cam Newton who led the team with 754 yards rushing and six touchdowns last season.

The 21-year-old McCaffrey enters the season with a new perspective after a "traumatic experience" earlier this summer.

McCaffrey, his brothers and some friends were in Colorado when they saw an elderly man fall off a cliff while hiking with his 13-year-old grandson. McCaffrey called 911 and one of his friends administered chest compressions.

McCaffrey said paramedics arrived at the scene in about 11 minutes. The 72-year-old Dan Smoker Sr. survived the fall and McCaffrey has developed a friendship with him and his family. He even plans to invite the Smokers to a Panthers home game this season.

"When you see something like that, you have a better appreciation for life and take every moment in," McCaffrey said. "We had a decompression moment after that. You look at life and realize it can be gone in any split second."
The Atlanta Falcons couldn't wait to show the biggest crowd to attend one of their practices their stadium's fully functioning retractable roof.

The Mercedes-Benz Stadium roof was closed for all but one Falcons regular-season game in the facility's 2017 debut season. The Falcons proved the roof is now ready for action by opening and closing the structure before Sunday's rare stadium-based training camp practice.

"It was cool to see it open today Garrett Celek Jersey , for sure," said quarterback Matt Ryan.

All the same, Ryan was grateful to see the eight massive petals on the camera lens-like retractable design close again. After practicing in the heat for the first two days of training camp, cool temperatures for an indoor session were a welcome change.

"We weren't mad that we were in air conditioning today for training camp," he said, smiling.

Coach Dan Quinn said he is looking forward to more open-air home games this season.

"How many times in this part of the country have we all driven to the stadium and said 'Man, this would be one awesome day to have it open,'" Quinn said. "I think that will be a really significant part of the fan experience here."

The Falcons said more than 60,000 tickets were distributed for the practice. The team called the practice a sellout, even though there were empty seats Bruce Smith Jersey , because all the tickets available, at $5 each, were sold. The Falcons said it was a team record for a training camp practice.

The large turnout led Falcons owner Arthur Blank to remember the Falcons holding training camp at Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina, when he bought the team in 2001.

"A huge day was 200 people," Blank said. "We don't practice normally at MBS, but it's incredible. I think it's a great tribute to the fan base, a great tribute to the organization and the relationship we've built with the fans. I'm thrilled to be here today to watch it and enjoy it."

Sunday was the team's first practice in pads. Quinn said his players always are motivated by the first practice when hitting is allowed. He said it was an extra perk for the players to practice before a much bigger crowd than can attend training camp at the team's practice facility in Flowery Branch, Georgia, about an hour north of downtown Atlanta.

"When I told them what we were doing Michael Crabtree Jersey , they were really pumped to hear how many people would be here for practice today," Quinn said. "It does add an element of excitement where the performance for practice ramps up a little more with so many fans here."

After seeing their scoring offense decline from No. 1 in the NFL in 2016 to No. 15 last season, the Falcons put an emphasis on running plays inside the 20 in their 11-on-11 drills.

The practice ended with Ryan scrambling to his left and passing to Mohamed Sanu for a touchdown.

NOTES: DE Takkarist McKinley was held out with a bruised right shoulder. He has had surgeries on both shoulders the past two years. "We'll see what it looks like for tomorrow," Quinn said before adding McKinley could have other scheduled days off in the next two weeks. RB Ito Smith (foot) and OT Ty Sambrailo (right hand) also are considered day to day after being held out. WR Calvin Ridley, who had a minor hamstring injury on Saturday, practiced and showed no sign of the injury. ... Training camp returns to the team's practice facility on Monday before a day off on Tuesday.
